Cunningham first in state duck stamp contest

Iolan Nathan Cunningham, a fourth grader at Jefferson Elementary School, placed first in his age category in the Kansas Junior Duck Stamp illustration contest recently. Cunningham will attend an awards ceremony at the Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita Saturday.
Winners were chosen from 660 entries across the state in four grade categories, K-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.
There were 242 entries in the 4-6 grade category. Receiving honorable mention in the same group were Iola Middle School students Allyson Hobbs, Clarie Moran, Bobbi Sinclair and Abigail Taylor.
In the 7-9 grade group, Rebecca Cunningham placed second and Joey Dunlap and Arion Kunkler received honorable mention. All attend Iola Middle School.
Matthew Cunningham, Iola High School, received honorable mention in the 10-12 grade category.
There were no local winners in the K-3 grade category.
First through third place winners will receive ribbons and certificates at the ceremony.
Christina Stockton, a high school student from Stockton, Kan., claimed the state’s top prize, Best of Show, for the second year in a row. She will compete with the other 49 state Best of Show entries in the national competition on April 23 at the Science Museum of Minnesota.
The national winner receives $5,000, a trip to Washington, D.C., and has their entry made into the national Junior Duck Stamp.
Proceeds from the sale of the $5 stamp fund conservation education and art scholarships.
