The Northern Star Girl Scout troops would like to honor the Iola sesquicentennial, help beautify Iola and provide incentive to eradicate weeds all through one event. “We’re planting flowers to replace dandelions,” said Scout leader Marty Meadows.
On May 2, the troops will hold a “Dandelion Day” in the Iola Chamber of Commerce parking lot.
Anyone who “brings in dandelions, root and all,” will receive potted annuals or perennials for their garden, Meadows said. The number of flowers someone receives will depend on the number of weeds they bring in, Meadows said. The dandelions must still have the root attached to count, she said.
The Girl Scouts will hand out marigolds, hollyhocks, cocks’ comb and zinnias. Other flowers will be available as well. Dandelion Day is an official sesquicentennial event.
